Local area

The soul of the latin quarter

Hôtel du Lys is steeped in history, thanks to its unique location on one of the oldest streets in old Paris, back when the present-day Boulevard Saint-Germain marked the city’s edge.

The street took its name from a sign depicting a serpent, which became Rue Serpente. This name traces back to a serpent motif in a Renaissance-era house with a turret on Rue d’Hautefeuille, where a carved wooden mermaid, called Serpente, can still be seen. The mermaid represented the serpent-woman, a protective deity from Poitou, which also inspired the name Rue des Poitevins, just steps from the hotel.

At that time, Rue Serpente was merely a path crossing the vineyards of the Clos de Laas, which would later be lined with stately homes.
